When I read Ovid’s Art of love I was amazed that someone would even come out with this type of humorous story/advice. It’s almost like reading a column in a magazine about how to get the woman of your dreams to be yours. Which is probably where the columnist in today’s magazines get their ideas from. The majority of the advice given also surprised me. What surprised me was how even in its humor it had some truth behind it. From the handout on page 4 lines 35-43 “Above all, don’t go near her on her birthday; or indeed on any day when you’re expected to give a present. However much you try to wriggle out of it, she’ll make you buy her something. A woman always knows how to exploit an ardent lover. Some pedlar fellow will be sure to turn up, and since buying’s a mania with them all she’ll be sure to find the very things she wants. She’ll ask you to look at them; then she’ll kiss you, and say “Oh do buy me that. It’ll last for years; it’s just the very thing I want and you couldn’t buy me anything I should like more.” It’s no good saying you don’t have any money on you; she’ll ask to write a cheque, and then you’ll curse the day you learned to write.” It continues to say how after that you are basically screwed and you have to continually buy her stuff and lend her money every time she asks because whatever and when ever she needs it is extremely important. It is extremely hilarious because there are times when I too do this to my husband. But I would never admit it to him. I wouldn't be shocked at how many other women might do this to their lovers or significant others. So Ovid to me speaks the truth and the truth is usually funny to us when we realize that we too do these things to gain the person we love. Cited from THE ART OF LOVE by Ovid.
